Abstract

Maintaining clarity on periscope head windows is critical to provide a high level of visibility for optimal vessel operation. Currently used polysiloxane based coatings that provide watershedding on periscope optical systems have poor mechanical properties, and must be frequently reapplied to maintain high optical quality. Luna’s research in the area of superhydrophobic coatings has demonstrated that improved watershedding can be achieved through controlled surface morphology. Luna proposes to utilize a transparent, superhydrophobic, abrasion resistant coating developed in our laboratories for use on periscope head window applications. This Phase I program has successfully demonstrated that this coating system i) has improved water shedding properties over current coating systems, ii) resists microfouling, and iii) have mechanical integrity for extended service life. The Phase II program will optimize these properties toward a qualified and field tested product. The technology developed on this program will decrease life cycle costs, reduce maintenance, and increase readiness by limiting equipment down-time.
