Abstract

Luna Innovations Incorporated proposes to develop a of stand-off covert method of detecting chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals using functionalized nanocrystals. Alterations of the near infrared spectra from the distributed nanoparticles under laser illumination will be analyzed using a compact high-sensitivity spectrometer integrated with telescope collection optics. The chemistry of the functionalized nanoparticles will be tailored to identify a specific set of target chemicals according to their combination of functional groups. This system can be used from the air or from the ground to monitor local atmospheric or surface contamination.
