Abstract

Luna Innovations proposes to develop a method of determining a user’s identity through a sub-vocal electromyogram-based biometric. Luna’s method will emphasize ergonomics, enabling the sailor to authenticate to the device with minimal manual intervention. Minimum effort, discomfort, and distraction will be required of the sailor, while maintaining the highest levels of security. The effectiveness of this biometric will be mathematically and experimentally established as a high-assurance means of preventing unauthorized users from accessing the device. The focus of Luna’s research will be on reducing false positives and false negatives to levels acceptable for deployed utilization. The method will be evaluated for use with various kinds of protective gear to ensure its accuracy for the sailor in any type of uniform. The components, devices, and methods needed to implement this biometric as part of a stationary or workspace authentication architecture will be determined. BENEFITS: Benefits of the novel biometric method: • Provides a highly secure computing environment • Protects against unauthorized or malicious use • Does not require manual operation • Does not distract or provide discomfort Commercial applications to any computing environment that requires high-assurance user authentication that emphasizes ergonomics and security: • Police, homeland security reactionary teams • Financial Institutions • Airport security • Asset protection security firms with mobile personnel (e.g., Wells Fargo) • Any private industry corporation with personnel who handle company confidential information
