Abstract

Luna Innovations will develop a deck covering that provides crew protection and damage mitigation by containing brittle fragments from failure of interior decking in the event of explosive casualty. The objective of the program is to demonstrate through resin synthesis and system formulation a zero volatile organic compound (VOC) coating that provides for containment of deck fragments. Luna Innovations, Inc. will synthesize a unique resin that will facilitate formulation of a high film build, non-toxic and zero-VOC deck covering. The coating system will eliminate exposure of applicator personnel to toxic compounds. The coating will be applied using existing methods for deck coverings and will not require specialized equipment or surface preparation. The deck covering will also be formulated to be lightweight, durable and easy to repair and maintain. Particular emphasis will be given to meeting the physical property requirements necessary to contain fragments produced by brittle fragmentation of the decking. Luna will demonstrate suitability for shipboard application through appropriate standard military testing. The coating will meet flammability, smoke and toxicity requirements for interior shipboard use. Blast protection will be achieved with a non-toxic, environmentally compliant coating based on a novel high performance resin that conforms to requirements for shipboard applications.
