Abstract

For the Phase I research project, Luna Innovations proposes to develop fiber optic-based valve position sensor for large air valve applications. Luna Innovations will leverage its experience with fiber optic sensors, and their patented fiber optic-based sensor system to complete this research. Luna Innovations will design and construct a rotary position sensor to meet the high accuracy, high vibration operating requirements. The photonic rotary sensor will utilize a single mode fiber to report angular position back to the photonic control module. The specifically designed encoder will contain reflective surfaces, which will be used to translate an optical signal to an absolute digital output signal. Luna Innovations' staff has experience with sensing technologies for numerous applications and has published numerous journal articles and conference papers on the topic. Previous encoder developments at Luna Innovations closely meet the range and response requirements. By optimizing the vibration stability and instrumentation methods for the specific needs of the DOD, the proposed method for measuring angular displacement will advance this state-of-the-art technology.
