Abstract

Emboli (gas bubbles, clots, fat, etc.) present a health hazard in commercial and military diving, high altitude operations, cardiac surgery, orthopedic surgery, and other medical areas. In Phase II, Luna will produce a field-ready Emboli Detection and Classification (EDAC) system to count, size and classify emboli, and place the EDAC technology on a practical path to commercialization. EDAC has already demonstrated higher count accuracy than Doppler ultrasound units with low false alarm rates, and this Phase II will address the major limitation of this technology by adding hardware for automatically determining the location of a vessel, even on a moving patient. This capability will be invaluable to the research community and future applications where continuous monitoring of a moving patient is desirable. Secondary outcomes of the Phase II include improved algorithms for classification and sizing of emboli, and more robust techniques for detecting showers of emboli as would occur during a forced decompression event.
