Abstract

A pressing need exists for the development of technologies to produce all types of transportation fuels from renewable sources. This project will create a complete, sustainable, and cost-effective technology that converts algal-oil-derived biodiesel into jet fuel. The proposed approach goes far beyond traditional biodiesel synthesis to convert a ready source of fuel, algal oil, into an aviation fuel that meets or exceeds all current performance specifications. A completely new chemistry, which uses environmentally-benign engineered catalysts, will convert both the triglycerides and free fatty acids found in algae oil into long-chain branched paraffins that are ideal jet fuel components. No modifications to the turbine engines or the infrastructure will be required to use this product. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The proposed process should be competitive with existing jet fuels made from petroleum, both in terms of performance and price. Airlines will benefit from low, stable fuel prices and society will benefit from reductions in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, this technology should enable a fundamental shift away from reliance on imported oil for vital civilian and military aviation needs
