Abstract

We propose here a new generation of two color superlattice-based VLWIR detectors. The objective will be achieved by combining the advantages of the molecular beam epitaxy(MBE) crystal growth technique, and band gap engineering of a superlattice structurewith reduced tunneling currents and accurate control of cut-off wavelengths. The proposed technology eliminates non-uniformity in the band gap of alloys that leads to high fixed pattern noise in the current technology. For improved space surveillance andthreat warning capabilities, where the operability to permit tracking and discrimination at longer ranges for colder objects is absolutely necessary, a breakthrough sensor technology such as that proposed here is critical. Such systems are anticipated tohave enormous potential not only in military, but also in commercial applications including remote/environmental IR sensing by NASA and civil airspace users.
