Abstract

THE NUMBER OF STABLE, INEXPENSIVE ANODE MATERIALS AVAILABLE FOR THE ELECTROSYNTHESIS OF CHEMICALS IS QUITE LIMITED. A SERIES OF FLUORINATED AND UNFLUORINATED HIGH SURFACE AREA CARBONS AND GRAPHITES ARE PROPOSED AS NEW ANODEMATERIALS FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF CHLORATE AND HYPOCHLORITE. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE HIGH SURFACE AREA ELECTRODES VS. DSA< >R<D>(RUO<V>2<D> ON TI) AND PT/IR COATED TITANIUM WILL BE EVALUATED FOR THESE TWO INDUSTRIALLY IMPORTANT ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESSES. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE PROPOSEDELECTRODE MATERIALS WILL PROVIDE EQUIVALENT OR BETTER PERFORMANCE THAN DSA ELECTRODES, RESULTING IN LOWER CAPITAL COSTS FOR ON-SITE PRODUCTION OF THESE DESIRABLE CHEMICALS.
