Abstract

A 300 Kw permanent magnet brushless dc motor with axial gap configuration to fit within 23 inch diameter by 10 inch long package is proposed for tracked vehicle applications. The stator constructed using novel concepts results in under 24 p.s.il, 4.4 gallons/min. oil flow to keep the maximum winding temperature under 200 deg C. The motor voltage is limited to 500 Vdc, and the efficiency including the controller is 90%. Fault tolerance, high reliability, quiet operation, and modular construction for 100-400kw ratings are the unique features. Phase I effort covers; electromagnetic design for optimum sizing using iterative design processes; finite element analysis for accurate determination of electromagnetic parameters; component design verification of innovative approaches to evaluate manufacturing processes; oil management and thermal analysis to ensure efficient cooling and long insulation life; structural design and analysis to verify integrity of the motor under vibration and shock loads, thermal stresses and dynamic loads; performance simulation and analysis under stall load, full load, acceleration and regeneration using motor controller parameters from an existing controller hardware available at M.I.T. The project is scheduled for 6 months with 865 man-hours effort by 6 staff members and consultants.
