THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAM IS TO INITIALLY CHARACTERIZE THE PERFORMANCE OF A NEW CLASS OF CALCIUM CELLSWHICH USE AN ORGANIC CATHOLYTE. BASED ON INITIAL DATA, THISCLASS OF CELLS WILL HAVE THE ENERGY AND POWER DENSITIES OF BOBBIN-TYPE LI/SOC12 CELLS. THE MAJOR ADVANTAGES OF THIS NEW CLASS OF CELLS ARE ITS HIGH PERFORMANCE LEVEL, THE NON-CORROSIVE NATURE OF ITS CATHOLYTE, THE LOW COST OF ITS COMPONENTS, AND ITS IMPROVED SAFETY ON ABUSE. THE PROGRAM APPROACH IS TO TEST SELECTED COMBINATIONS OF CATHOLYTES CAPABLE OF PROVIDING AN ENERGY-DENSE CELL WITH TAA-CATALYZEDCARBON CATHODES TO DEVELOP A COMBINATION WHICH WILL PROVIDE BOTH AN ENERGY AND A POWER DENSE CELL. THE MECHANISM OF THETAA-CATALYZED CATHODE REACTION WILL BE STUDIED USING A ROTATING RING-DISK ELECTRODE SYSTEM; THE RESULTS OBTAINED WILL BE VERIFIED USING GC AND GC/MS.
