Abstract

THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE METHODS OF EXTRACTING MICROWAVE POWER FROM A CLUSTER KLYSTRON BY COMBINING SEVERAL LOW-CURRENT, MEDIUM-POWER KLYSTRONS TO PRODUCE HIGH PEAK POWER WITH VERY HIGH EFFICIENCY. A CLUSTER KLYSTRON IN COMBINATION WITH A PULSE COMPRESSION SYSTEM CAN BE USED AS A RADIOFREQUENCY POWR SOURCE FOR FUTURE LINEAR COLLIDERS. PHASE I WILL CONSIST OF FEASIBILITY AND DESIGN STUDIES OF MULTI-GAP COUPLED OUTPUT CAVITIES AND CYLINDRICAL COMBINER WAVEGUIDES CAPABLE OF PRODUCING 150-MW, MICROSECOND LONG PULSES AT 11.4 GHZ. SEVERAL SCHEMES OF TRAVELING WAVE OUTPUT STRUCTURES AND WAVEGUIDE COUPLED COMBINERS OPERATING IN THE CIRCULAR TE01 OR TM01 MODE WILL BE CONSIDERED. CONCEPTS OF TM01 TO TE01 MODE CONVERTERS WILL ALSO BE STUDIED. THIS WILL FACILITATE INTERFACE WITH A SLED-II TYPE PULSE COMPRESSION SYSTEM WHICH OPERATES IN THE CIRCULAR TE01 MODE. THE APPROACH OF USING TRAVELING WAVE STRUCTURES WITH COAXIAL OR RECTANGULAR OUTPUT WAVEGUIDES TO EXTRACT POWER FROM SEVERAL LOW-PURVEYANCE SOURCES, WHICH ARE PHASE SYNCHRONIZED AND THEN COUPLED BY IRISES TO A COMBINER TO PRODUCE HIGH POWER, PROMISES TO BE A COST EFFECTIVE METHOD. COMPUTER METHODS DEVELOPED IN THIS PROJECT WILL BE APPLICABLE TO THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF A WIDE RANGE OF MICROWAVE COMPONENTS.
