Abstract

THIS RESEARCH WILL INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF AND TECHNIQUES FOR EXTRACTING MICROWAVE POWER FROM A FREE ELECTRON LASER USING A SEPTUM COUPLER AND FOR TRANSPORTING THE RF WAVE TO FEED A HIGH GRADIENT STRUCTURE IN A TWO-BEAM ACCELERATOR. NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS WILL BE USED TO STUDY THE GEOMETRIC EFFECTS OF THE WAVEGUIDES AND THE EFFECTS OF THERMAL LOAD ON THE MODE CONVERSION AND PHASE STABILITY OF THE TRANSPORTED RF WAVE. METHODS OF CONTROLLING THESE EFFECTS WILL BE PROPOSED TO MAINTAIN THE TE01 MODE AND TO MINIMIZE UNDESIRABLE PHASE SHIFTS IN THE MICROWAVE DURING EXTRACTION AND TRANSPORT. THE METHODOLOGY DEVELOPED IN THIS RESEARCH WILL BE USED AS A BASIC DESIGN TOOL FOR THE COUPLING WAVEGUIDES TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE TWO-BEAM ACCELERATOR. POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS TO THE RELATIVISTIC KLYSTRON ALSO WILL BE INVESTIGATED.
