Abstract

FEASIBILITY OF USING AERATION PRETREATMENT BEFORE WATER IS APPLIED TO SLOW SAND FILTERS. A SIMPLE AERATION-SETTLING SYSTEM IS EXAMINED TO DETERMINED IF THE SYSTEM DEVELOPS A SETTLEABLE BIOLOGIC FLOC, PROVIDES TREATMENT AND REGULATES DISSOLVED OXYGEN (DO). THE SYSTEM IS EXAMINED TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF A METHOD TO REMOVE BACTERIA, GIARDIA CYSTS, TURBIDITY, AND SUSPENDED SOLIDS, INDER CONDITIONS WHERE RAW WATER IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR SLOW SAND FILTERS OR PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE: (1) DETERMINE THE ABILITY OF A SIMPLE AERATION SYSTEM (SEVERAL UNIT COMBINATIONS AND FLOW RATES) TO A DEVELOP BIOLOGIC FLOC TO REMOVE GIARDIA CYSTS, SUSPENDED SOLIDS, TURBIDITY, BACTERIA AND MAINTAIN DO. (2) DETERMINE AERATION, SETTLING, AND DETENTION TIME CONFIGURATIONS WHICH PROVIDE THE MOST EFFECTIVE PRETREATMENT. THE RESULTS WILL BE COMPARED WITH RECENT SLOW SAND FILTER RESEARCH. PAST RESEARCH PROVIDES SIGNIFICANT DATA FOR SLOW SAND FILTER WATER TREATMENT.
