Abstract

The Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW) utilized by the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) provides a tactical wireless internetworking capability for both users and backbone infrastructure. WNW uses an adaptive networking architecture that optimizes network routing performance and overall network stability for various tactical applications. WNW has a full set of networking features and is scalable to a large number of nodes with medium mobility and medium density network coverage areas. Good performance with large scalability is a significant challenge for WNW in a mobile ad-hoc tactical environment. DataSoft will develop a set of algorithms and protocols to enhance the scalability and efficiency of WNW networks. Cross-layer enhancements that integrate functions across multiple layers of the network stack will be considered, including cooperative transmission power control for throughput enhancement, content-based routing, and content-aware QoS. The feasibility of potential enhancements will be evaluated and design concepts refined through iterative simulation experiments. At the conclusion of Phase I, proof-of-concept demonstrations will be performed to illustrate the benefits and feasibility of the proposed enhancements.
