Abstract

Composite Technology Development, Inc. (CTD) proposes to develop a high strength, high stiffness longeron incorporating CTD's TEMBOT Elastic Memory Composite (EMC) material, which could be used as the main structural element in a wide variety of furlable truss boom designs. The proposed longeron provides deployment force and dampening, and functions as the primary load carrying element in the deployed boom. The proposed EMC longeron is mechanically simple, highly reliable, and highly damped during actuation, and provides a high-precision deployment motion and high post-deployment stiffness and strength.
