A state-of-the art CFD methodology that has well established aero-acoustic capabilities will be implemented for -investigating turbulence/acoustic interactions that characterize cavity flowfields. Exploratory numerical investigations will be conducted using the three-dimensional, finite volume CFD code, CRAFT , which utilizes a fully implicit, characteristic based upwind scheme with higher order spatial and temporal accuracy to provide for robust shock capturing while simultaneously preserving acoustic accuracy. Prior applications of CRAFT to various cavity/ducted and jet problems demonstrated its ability in providing accurate representation of unsteady flowfields characterized by pressure oscillations, periodic vortex shedding, and other instability modes. The version of CRAFT to be utilized will contain both RNS based two-equation turbulence models (ke and kw with compressibility and curvature corrections) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) capabilities. Hence, it serves as an optimum framework for conducting evaluation of turbulence modeling approaches for application to cavity flowfields. The code will also be used as a benchmark to evaluate the ability of overset grid and unstructured grid methods to provide accurate representation of aeroacoustic and turbulence/acoustic interactions in a cavity flowfield environment.
