Abstract

SAFE TREATMENT AND UTILIZATION OF HAZARDOUS SOLID AND LIQUID WASTES IS A TOPIC OF SIGNIFICANT CONCERN. THERE IS THE NEED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TREATMENT PROCESS WHICHDOES ALL THE FOLLOWING: 0 CREATES A PRODUCT THAT IS NON-HAZARDOUS 0 PRODUCES A MATERIAL SUITABLE FOR BENEFICIAL USE 0 IS ECONOMIC TO UTILIZE ALTERS HALOGENATED ORGANICS AND TOXIC ORGANICS TO NON-TOXIC ORGANICS. THIS RESEARCH WILL AFFORD SUCH A TREATMENT. IT IS BASED ON THE PATENTED CHEMFIX PROCESS AND UTILIZES AND EXPANDS UPON THE CHEMISTRY INTRINSIC TO THE PROCESS. THE FIXATION OF PEARSON SOFT ACIDS, SUCH AS MERCURY, CADMIUM, ARSENIC, LEAD, AND SILVER, IS NOT ALWAYS SUCCESSFUL WITH THE EXIST- ING CHEMFIX PROCESS, BUT WITH THE ADDITION OF SELECTED ORGANOSULFIDES AND ORGANOAMINES, THESE METALS ARE ALSO IMMOBILIZED. IN ADDITION, THE CHEMFIX-TREATED SLUDGE HAS THE IDEAL ENVIRONMENT FOR REDUCING AGENTS TO DECHLORINATE PESTICIDES AND POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYLS INTO BIODEGRADABLE ORGANICS. A FEW POTENTIAL REDUCING AGENTS ARE HYDROGEN, AMMONIA, SULFIDE, SULFITE, AND HYDRIDE. WITH THESEADDITIVES, THE TREATMENT OF HAZARDOUS WASTES BY THE CHEMFIX PROCESS CAN BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE CERTAIN WASTES HERETOFORENOT EFFECTIVELY INACTIVATED. DEPENDING UPON THE PROPERTIES OF THESE WASTES, THE CHEMFIX-TREATED HAZARDOUS WASTE MAY BE RE-USEABLE AS AGRICULTURAL LIME AND FERTILIZING SOIL AMENDERS. IN ADDITION, FURTHER PHYSICAL TESTING WILL INDICATE THE VIABILITY OF THE PRODUCT FOR LANDFILL COVER, ROADBED MATERIAL, BUILDING MATERIAL, SOIL AMENDER, OR SLOPE SLABILIZER.
