Abstract

This SBIR Phase I program will address the fabrication and testing of pseudo single crystal relaxor ferroelectrics (PMN:PT) for high performance electromechanical actuators. In collaboration with Innovation Powder Technology, Inc. the crystallographic orientation of solid state grown PMN:PT will be controlled using hydrothermally synthesized perovskite PbTiO3. The use of large 5-10 micron platelets will offer the ability of in-situ templated crystal growth in monolithic and multilayer structures at the electrode interface. High performance actuators with E-field induced strains >>0.2%, high energy density, etc. are anticipated. The above process offers the ability to fabricate relatively large area, complex structures (>>1cm2) using established low-cost manufacturing concepts. The Phase I research will provide a basis for further templated crystal growth of a host of piezoelectric materials using PMN:PT and PZT platelets.
