Abstract

THE DOMESTIC GAS-FIRED COOKING RANGE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A MAJOR SOURCE OF INDOOR AIR POLLUTION, AND DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH HAVE BEEN LINKED TO ITS NORMAL USE. THE PLAUSIBLE CAUSATIVE AGENTS PRODUCED BY THESE APPLIAMCES ARE NITROGEN DIOXIDE AND CARBONMONOXIDE. THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH PROPOSED IS TO CONSTRUCT A WORKING PROTOTYPE OF A CATALYTIC INFRA-RED GAS BURNER SUITABLE FOR KITCHEN COOKING THAT WILL PRODUCE NEGLIGIBLE AMOUNTS OF NITROGEN DIOXIDE AND CARBON MONOXIDE. A PATENT PENDING PROCESS USED BY CEC WILL ALLOW THE BURNER TO OPERATE EFFICIENTLY WITH RADIATION AS ITS MAJOR MODE OF HEAT TRANSFER TOT HE COOKING UTENSIL. THE BURNER'S OPERATING TEMPERATURE WILL BE LOW ENOUGH SO THAT OXIDES OF NITROGEN ARE EXPECTED TO CONSTITUTE LESS THAN 10 PPM OF THE EXHAUST GASES. BECAUSE OF THE CATALYSIS-AIDED COMBUSTION, CARBON MONOXIDE CONCENTRATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE LESS THAN TO PPM OF THE EXHAUST GASES.
