Abstract

The anticipated result of the proposed approach will be an automated standardized and formalized design process integrated with a set of tools and data bases which will support the application of HSI to ship system and total ship design with emphasis on effectively, efficiently, and safely reducing human workloads and subsequently, ship manning. The value of the process, tools, and data bases, designated SHIP MATE, will be to ensure that, in the reduction of ship manning, attention is focused on the allocation of functions to the human and automation, the effective role of the human in system operation, and the integration of the human into ship operations. The Phase I effort products will include (a) the formulation of the HSI Reduced Manning Process, (b) the selection of tools and data bases to be included in SHIP MATE, including new tools/data bases, and adaptions of existing tools/data bases, (c) the development of functional specifications for selected tools/data bases, to include models of tool/data base and user interaction, and (d) the initial prototyping and validation of selected SHIP MATE tool and data base concepts.
