Abstract

UNDER THE SLOW FREQUENCY AND LONG LIFE CONDITIONS THAT ARE OF INTEREST IN A NUMBER OF ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS THAT INVOLVE CYCLIC LOADING AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE (OFFSHORE OIL PLATFORMS, SUBMARINES, SURFACE SHIPS), THE ACQUISITION OF FCGR DATA IN THE NEARTHRESHOLD REGIME IS ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT BECAUSE ACCURATE CRACK MEASUREMENTS ARE REQUIRED OVER RELATIVELY LONG-TERM EXPOSURE PERIODS IN AN AGGRESIVE ENVIRONMENT (SEAWATER). FURTHERMORE, THERE IS A DEARTH OF SUCH DATA, PARTICULARLY UNDER SLOW FREQUENCY AND LONG LIFE CONDITIONS. SUCH DATA IS ESSENTIAL FOR PREDICTING LONG-TERM STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE. THE FOLLOWING IS A PROPOSAL TO DEVELOP A COMPUTER-ENHANCED FCGR TESTING METHODOLOGY THAT WILL PERMIT ACQUISITION OF ACCURATE, RELIABLE FCGR DATA UNDER PERTINENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND IN PRACTICAL TIME FRAMES.
