ABDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE REASONING IN MAINTENANCE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS

THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF ABDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE REASONING ALGORITHMS THAT WILL AID IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM (FCS) MAINTENANCE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS AND THAT WILL OVERCOME MANY OF THE LIMITATIONS OF EXISTING DIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY. A FOCUS OF THE EFFORT WILL BE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CAPABILITY TO REASON ABOUT FSC FAULTS AT A SYSTEM LEVEL WITH UNCERTAIN INFORMATION. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE EFFORT ARE TO: DEVELOP THE TOP LEVEL DESIGN OF A COMPREHENSIVE ABDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE REASONING SYSTEM FOR FCS DIAGNOSTICS; DEVELOP THE DETAILED DESIGN FOR PORTIONS OF THE REQUIRED REASONING ALGORITHMS; IMPLEMENT A DEMONSTRATION OF THE PROPOSED ABDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE REASONING MECHANISMS TO DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY AND THE BENEFITS OF THE SELECTED APPROACH; INVESTIGATE AND DOCUMENT THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS, AND DEVELOP A ROADMAP FOR ATTAIN-ING THE HIGH PAYOFF CAPABILITIES. THESE OBJECTIVES WILL BE MET BY PERFORMING THE INITIAL DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A FCS DIAGNOSTIC ABDUCTIVE AND INDUCTIVE REASONING (DAIR) SYSTEM.
