By Javier.Saade, SBA OfficialPublished: November 19, 2014Last week in “Keep it Weird” Austin, Texas, hundreds of scientists, technologists, doctors, mathematicians, artists, engineers, tinkerers, dreamers, doers, business people, professors, government types and entrepreneurs convened for the co-located and related events:  1) The Defense Energy Summit & Innovation Showcase, 2) the Smart Cities Innovation Challenge and 3) the Fall National SBIR/STTR Conference & Showcase. The Defense Energy Summit & Innovation Showcase focused on how to accelerate clean energy and infrastructure solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) including microgrid production, energy storage, portable power, distributed energy, utility tech, transportation, water management and soldier technologies. The Smart Cities Innovation Challenge represents the global vanguard communities addressing the growing resiliency pressures of climate, energy, water, food and mobility.  This challenge brings together vetted solutions to accelerate smart and sustainable development of urban communities world-wide. This challenge also leverages the DoD innovation needs and funding programs with parallel needs of the modern smart city.The Fall National SBIR/STTR Conference & Showcase entails discussions, deal making and policy learning regarding the government's largest innovation effort focused on small business.  The programs, which pump over $2 billion a year into cutting edge small businesses, are effectively the largest single STEM seed fund in the world.
