To provide the information needed to better understand and more effectively manage nutrients, the Challenging Nutrients Coalition is coordinating innovative approaches to develop a suite of effective and affordable sensors to measure nutrients in water and on land. The group has launched the Nutrient Sensor Challenge, a two-year prize competition to accelerate the development and deployment of affordable nutrient sensors for use in aquatic environments. The goals are for next-generation sensors developed through the Challenge to: ·         be easy to use in maintenance-free deployments of three months,·         cost less than $5,000 to purchase,·         and be commercially available by 2017.                                                       Affordable sensors are essential to: ·         improve our measurements and basic understanding of this critical environmental issue.·         expand monitoring and forecasting of nutrient levels and harmful algal blooms in our lakes, rivers, and coasts.·         ensure the effectiveness of policies that aim to reduce nutrient loads. Nutrient pollution is one of America’s most serious water quality issues. We’ve teamed up to spark innovation to develop affordable and reliable sensors. Our #NutrientSensor Challenge will provide more data to help reduce nutrient pollution & hypoxia. www.nutrients-challenge.orgThe Challenging Nutrients Coalition has been coordinated by White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Geological Survey, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Everglades Foundation, Partnership on Technology Innovation and the Environment, Tulane University, the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System, and the Alliance for Coastal Technologies.                                                                                                 Link to OSTP Blog:http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/12/17/innovating-protect-our-waterwaysLink to EPA Connect Blog:http://blog.epa.gov/epaconnect/2014/12/new-challenge-put-technology-to-work-to-protect-drinking-water/
